Simple Workout Routines for MMA

Are you looking for a simple workout routine for MMA? Have you ever wondered what workout and conditioning routines some of the top mixed martial artists today are using? Then the information below may help you.

Let’s take a look at some of the basic principles behind any good MMA workout. That way, you’ll be able to understand what it takes to condition your body for mixed martial arts or any other combat sport.

Let’s start with hill sprints. Hill sprints are great because they give you a super high intensity workout in a very short period of time. Are they good for MMA? They are great for MMA!

Do professional mixed martial artists use hill sprint workouts?

Chuck Liddell does. On UFC All Access, he pushed a wheelbarrow up a hill and also did regular hill sprints. The wheelbarrow pushing sounds like something out of a Rocky movie, but it is a great conditioning tool.

Royce Gracie and Keith Jardine both run hill sprints too. They take regular hill sprints up a notch by doing them in the sand. If you have a beach nearby, you can do the same thing. The sand obviously makes the running harder and increases the intensity of the workout. And you don’t necessarily have to live near a beach to find a hill of sand to run on.

Two of the cities I have lived in over the past year had parks with very long and steep hills of sand. If you are resourceful enough, you will probably find something where you live too.

A Circuit Workout routine for Mixed martial arts

Circuit training is probably the most widely used conditioning workout among all top fighters, grapplers and martial artists. Although each fighter does them differently, there are a lot of similarities across the board.

For example, mixed martial artist Renato Babalu Sobral’s uses circuit training workouts twice a week. His workouts last about 45 minutes each and are brutally intense. He uses a combination of weight machines, resistance bands and other conditioning drills in 30 intervals followed by 10 seconds of rest.

Very similar training is used by many Brazilian Jiu Jitsu fighters. Mario Sperry is one of them. When preparing for a fight, he does a circuit workout lasting about 45 minutes three days a week. Similar to Sobral, he uses weight machines, resistance bands and a special combination of conditioning drills that mimic the movements of a fight. This is probably the perfect MMA workout.

You’ll see Tito Ortiz working out with circuit style training as well. Although his routine looks a little different. You’ll see Tito doing five minutes of high intensity bag work and then rotating to a different bag to do a different five-minute circuit. This style of circuit training is used by virtually all mixed martial artists and boxers. It’s a tremendous way to improve your conditioning in a very realistic way for a fight or boxing match.

We’ve just covered two of the most popular workout routines for mixed martial arts. These conditioning workouts can easily be copied and added to your own routine. One important thing to note is that these are very intense workouts and therefore you want to be careful not to overdo them. Don’t do hill sprints more than two days a week or three days at the max

The same goes for circuit training. The more intense the workout is, the less often you want to do it. That’s why a lot of fighters only do intense circuit routines two or three times each week. Any more than that and its counterproductive. No one said an MMA workout routine has to last all day to be effective. In fact, some of best workout routines for MMA don’t last very long at all.
